Although there is an abundance of coffee shops in the east end, there were none in Edgewood- until recently. A few months ago, City Café opened at 106 East Swissvale Avenue.
I stopped in on a Tuesday afternoon to catch up on some paperwork, and was greeted by the barista/owner. I asked for a small coffee, and dug into my work. Instead of serving me some Joe from a pre-brewed pot, he poured two shots of espresso into a mug, and added hot water. I had never had coffee prepared this way- it was excellent. The shots were strong, and the added water really bloomed the oils in the rich blend.
The owner and I engaged in small talk, as I tried to complete my work. Prior to opening in the Edgewood/Swissvale area, he operated his shop in the city. I’m not sure what opted him to move, and I didn’t ask.
In addition to a large variety of coffee drinks, City Café also serves fresh fruit nectars, muffins and pastries, and ice cream.
City Café is a welcoming spot. The coffee served at this small café is excellent, and I’m sure the owner would appreciate an increase in business. If you have a hankering for some quality brew, give City Café a try, and help support small, locally owned businesses.
