Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Whiskey. Beer. Short people wearing green. It’s not hard to see why St. Patrick’s Day is one of my favorite holidays. But it’s not just an excuse to drink massive amounts of beer. On St. Patrick’s Day, pennywhistles become an acceptable, even integral instrument in punk rock. On this one glorious day, revelers are forgiven for knocking the piss out of each other, because, you know, the Irish love to fight!
Yes, it sure is one of my favorite holidays.
This year, I plan to approach St. Patricks Day (well, tomorrow, March 13th) with the same plan I use every year: there is no plan. This day is an adventure!! We walk everywhere, usually through many neighborhoods, stopping in bars and making friends all over the city.
In the morning, my friends and I will walk to the Harris (Grill) and binge on green breakfast burritos & green beer. (“Ya gotta have a base…”) Then we’ll hop on whatever bus is headed downtown and join in the parade mayhem. I’m not really nuts about insanely large groups of people, though, so, like last year, I’m hoping we can find some hole-in-the-wall bar that will be happy to accomodate some saucy Irish lasses. I’m sure we won’t have a hard time with that!
Since Market Square is closed this year, the city is discouraging open containers. You can find out more about the Parade/Market Square Party here http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/entertainment/542013/detail.html
Whether you end up at the Harp & Fiddle in the Strip or any of the millions of bars in the South Side, I think this city is going to prove once again to have one of the best St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the country! Now whether I can remember enough to blog about it on Sunday is another matter altogether…
