One of my favorite things about summer is the abundance of Farmers Markets that pop up throughout the city. In addition to beautiful fresh produce, these markets give foodies and artisans a showcase for their tasty new products.
This Saturday I visited the Swissvale Farmers Market. The mission of the Swissvale Farmers Market is to provide healthy, fresh produce, improve local food security, support the entrepreneurial efforts of local businesses, support local farmers, and promote a sense of community.
There was an abundance of fresh veggies and fruits, all perfectly ripe, and beautifully colored. Sweet corn, garden tomatoes, gargantuan zucchini and squash were everywhere. Enrico Biscotti was in attendance selling their signature, and Pittsburgh-famous baked goods. I also got to sample Cherish Creamery’s sumptuous chevre. Cherish Creamery specializes in impeccable fresh, flavored goat, and feta cheeses. It was my first time sampling their cheese, and it was velvety smooth and delectable. I took some feta cheese home, and prepared a watermelon salad with it- perfect.

I stopped by Portogallo Peppers N’AT and picked up a jar of Hot Giardiniera. Chances are if you’re not from Pittsburgh, you have no idea what this is. Giardiniera is a mélange of pickled carrots, celery, cauliflower, and colorful summer veggies. This versatile condiment mixture can be eaten as-is, but is usually enjoyed as a topping on meat sandwiches, bratwursts, and other Italian fare. If you’ve never experienced Hot Giardiniera, it’s worth stopping by Portogallo Peppers N’AT to purchase a jar.

The Swissvale Farmer’s Market is held every Saturday 9am- 1pm May 7th through October 9th. If you love fresh food, and hanging around like-minded culinarians, the Swissvale Farmer’s Market is worth a visit!
