61 B Cafe’, Regent Square, Pittsburgh

There’s an abundance of good, privately owned coffee shops in Pittsburgh, especially in the east end. These gathering spots provide quality Joe, pastries, and pleasant atmospheres for their patrons. Lately, my favorite go-to spot has been Biddle’s escape in Regent Square. I go there every Sunday to read my paper, drink hot Joe (with heavy cream) and chat with my friends. Today however, I tried a new spot on Braddock Avenue, 61 B Café.

Simpatico Espresso

Simpatico Espresso is located in the old Acloa Building (the Regional Enterprise Tower), and has been serving customers since May of 2006. In addition to serving standard coffee, espresso, and cappuccino, you can pick up fresh baked goods prepared by Colangelo’s Bakery, Enrico’s Biscotti, Café Raymond, and Allegro Hearth Bakery.

Grounds and Hounds Coffee Company

Background: In the spring of 2012, I came across a dog adoption event in Santa Monica, California. No thoughts of pet ownership were in my head upon entering, but when a malnourished Dalmatian crawled in my lap, it was clear I had a new family member. Similar stories occur thousands of times each week, but there is still a shortfall of suitable homes for these abandoned dogs – don’t they all deserve a second chance? Each year the lives of 2.1 million dogs are cut short due shelter over-crowding and the lack of financial means.

Biddle’s Escape Sunday Brunch

If you haven’t been to Biddle’s Escape in Regent Square, you’re missing out. The quaint (but busy) coffee shop is a haven for poets, writers, artists, and other creative types. It’s also a fantastic place to get a real cup of coffee.
