9th Annual Savor Pittsburgh Event

A collection of Pittsburgh’s finest chefs will gather at Savor Pittsburgh: A Celebration of Cuisine on Thursday, August 21, 2014 to share their favorite recipes for the coveted “Dish of the Year” honors. Savor Pittsburgh will take place this year at an exciting new location, Stage AE! Located on the North Shore of Pittsburgh, Stage AE is the second-of-its-kind indoor/outdoor venue in American and will be outfittedwith elegant white canopies as some of Pittsburgh’s best chefs and restaurants come together for a special night.

Simpatico Espresso

Simpatico Espresso is located in the old Acloa Building (the Regional Enterprise Tower), and has been serving customers since May of 2006. In addition to serving standard coffee, espresso, and cappuccino, you can pick up fresh baked goods prepared by Colangelo’s Bakery, Enrico’s Biscotti, Café Raymond, and Allegro Hearth Bakery.

Biddle’s Escape Sunday Brunch

If you haven’t been to Biddle’s Escape in Regent Square, you’re missing out. The quaint (but busy) coffee shop is a haven for poets, writers, artists, and other creative types. It’s also a fantastic place to get a real cup of coffee.

I’m constantly asked, “Where can you get authentic Italian food in Pittsburgh?” Until recently, I didn’t have an answer. Last Saturday I had the opportunity to dine at Cenacolo- Pittsburgh’s first truly authentic Italian eatery, located in North Huntington, PA.

Angelo’s, Washington, PA

The very best fried zucchini I’ve ever tasted was at Angelo’s restaurant in Washington, PA. These particular slices of zucchini were perfectly ripe. Instead of traditional breading (I always make mine with panko for that extra crunch) they were battered and fried. The coating was crunchy and delicious. Each strand of fried zucchini become increasingly delicious as I sampled it with the homemade marinara and spicy horseradish sauce ($10.00)

Back Porch Restaurant, Belle Vernon, PA

Every once in a while I come across a restaurant with real character. These eating establishments are usually small, have a loyal following, and have been around for years. The Back Porch Restaurant in Belle Vernon is quaint, comfortable, and most importantly, serves excellent food.

The Map Room, Regent Square

I met a friend out for dinner last night. Initially I was in the mood for deep-fried goodness, so we ventured to D’s Six Pax and Dogz. Unfortunately, D’s doesn’t serve food after 10pm on the weekends. Luckily, The Map Room was open, and the kitchen was still making food.

Nola on the Square, Pittsburgh PA

Pittsburgh may be the last place you would expect to find Cajun and Creole food but French-born Yves Carreau had a vision for a Market Square landmark that would ultimately become NOLA on the Square. If you are looking for the different flavors of New Orleans combined with a classic jazz atmosphere, NOLA on the Square is definitely for you.

Thai Cottage, Pittsburgh, PA

Thai Cottage now occupies the space that Green Mango once did. The ambiance is similar to that of the former eatery- minimal décor ornamented the walls; soft ethnic music played in the background.
