Root 174

In mid-July, the fine citizens of Regent Square are going to have another choice when it comes to dining- Root 174.

Brain Teaser Drink

One of my clients asked me to come up with a special cocktail- he likes solving puzzles. I call this the Brain Teaser:

Ice Cream Recipe

When of the best parts about summer is ice cream- cold, frozen cream with sugar… yum. When I was a kid, my father would take me to Baskin Robbins. “Don’t tell your Mom we had ice cream before dinner, she’ll get mad,” he would say. We would always order the same thing- two scoops of chocolate fudge ice cream on a sugar cone; extra napkins to wipe away the evidence, please. In the two miles that it took to get home, we would finish our cones. My father would look in the rear-view mirror to make sure he didn’t have any signs of chocolate on his face; then he would make sure I was clean as well. My mom never suspected, but I imagine she was curious when my dad and I only had a few bites of dinner.

Cibo, Pittsburgh, PA

Cibo, in Regent Square is the owned by Dino DeFlaviao. If you live in the east end, and don’t know who Dino is, you must not know the areas as well as you think. Prior to being Cibo, DeFlavio’s Pizza occupied the space that is now the new Italian restaurant. Cibo has only been open a few days, but so far the food has been received well by the East End crowd.

Grilled Chicken Salad with Walnuts

I’ve always liked chicken salad- it’s easy to make, and makes for a delicious meal, especially during the summer.

Herb grilled chicken salad with walnuts is a tasty meal, especially when served on a rich, buttery croissant.

Grilling Fresh Fish

A lot of people are going to be having barbecues this summer- burgers and dogs will be thrown over hot coals, as will fresh fish, different cuts of meats, and there’s nothing like fresh grilled vegetables. It’s easy to get into a rut when cooking on the grill- the same old chicken and steaks can become boring, and if you have guests, you may want to spice things up a bit.

Summer Salads

I love salads, especially during the summer. They’re easy to prepare, and you can mix and match different type of greens with veggies, proteins, nuts and fruits. There really aren’t any combinations that won’t work; just pick a few of your favorite flavor combinations, and get mixing.
